OUR NEW RECORD IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AT SOPHOMORE LOUNGE RECORDS DOT COM. if you haven't had a chance to check it out, please do. here are some real good reviews...

GIVING UP'S NEW "PEACE SIGN/FROWN FACE" FULL-LENGTH 12" reviewed by Jeff Ogiba of I Must Find Atlantis (and VICE/Noisey/Black Gold Brooklyn, etc).

Seriously, what is there to do in Iowa besides dodge tornadoes and till the field before sundown? Giving Up sound like they figured out the very answer to that question and musically scrap-booked it within the nine tracks found on their second LP, Peace Sign/Frown Face. Giving Up could've been a K Records band twenty years ago, or if someone told me that these guys ate poorly, smoked massive amounts of marijuana and lived in a snowcap community up in Vermont... I might be swayed to believe that as well. "I found this Built to Spill demo tape baking under the sun in the desert, do you think it still works?" or "Shit, the Modest Mouse dudes are really hitting the bottle hard these days" or even "Damn, I don't own this rare, brief Lou Barlow side project?" are just a few believable pitches; Giving Up knows their roots and doesn't care if you've ever heard any of the bands they dig or might sound influenced by. They also have a logo to accompany their second LP and it's hippy-meets-proto-grunge; think logo Kurt Cobain and Greg Sage would've, could've used for their fantasy epic supergroup existing only in aggressively thirsty musical minds. The songs on PS/FF come off as honest and modest and real. The album is relaxingly slow to mid-tempo, perfectly sloppy, whiny without being pitchy, and although I can't remember a single lyric after hearing the album two times through before writing this review, I'm admittedly hooked. The quality, creativity and originality of the actual songwriting kicks the asses of all the bands who think their sound comes after the effect pedals and in the studio. Giving Up built their house properly and have every freedom available to decorate it as they please.

GIVING UP "(PEACE SIGN/FROWN FACE)" (5 out of 5 stars)

This is the second new one from Sophomore Lounge I've reviewed today, this time from a band called Giving Up, who I know nothing about. This is a pretty sweet package - massive and very cute screenprinted poster, little hand-stitched riso-printed photo booklet, download card, lyric sheet...the press release is pretty surreal and doesn't explain a lot either, but what's on the record is some kind of wonky, bright, sentimental post-punk. Phil says it sounds a bit like Three Mile Pilot and I think he's got a point, but it's much messier and has more of a jubilant lo-fi DIY feel.

There's boy-girl vocals and the guy's got quite a yelpy voice and then the girl's voice is all pretty and earnest like Jenny Lewis back when she was in Rilo Kiley. It's reminding me of so much indie rock stuff I like, from Meneguar to the Moldy Peaches to 12 Rods to Tar Feathers to the Mae Shi to Urusei Yatsura to Atlanta's Carnivores. It's reminding me of Tar Feathers and Meneguar the most, with less the former's queasy stumbling grooves and the latter's yelpy grungey accessibility.

It's earnest and ramshackle and a little bit twee but the tunes are consistently catchy and affecting and there's enough garagey rough edges to keep it from being too cloying. Absolutely one of the most charming and enjoyable things I've heard all month. All the things I love about slacker indie updated through rose-tinted glasses. As a child of the '90s I'm a little bit in love with this band already. Can't wait to get this home and listen to it until I know all the songs inside out. Can we have more please?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

hey babes. you should grab a download of the e.p. we got. 6 songs. up for you for free at http://givingup.castlemorbius.com/media/jittersmp3.zip

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

so its been a hot sec since we got back from tour. im pretty sure the consensus is that we all wish we were still at it. all and all it went well. cryin, fightin, cussin, getting dumped, and falling in love the whole way. in columbus some guy was like, "look at this band making their girlfriends carry in their equitment." to which jenny responded, "fuck you dude." to which said dude's girlfriend chimed in, "she's probably in the fucking band you pig." we met a ton of solid dudes. a bunch of sweet hearts helping us out, putting us up. Liz's house, Joel's DAD, Steffano + family, Levon, Kent, Debbie and Garry, Chuck and Jannis, Chris and Katy, Rob, Christopher and Robin, Isabelle, Korey and Maggy, Franky and family to name a few. Heavy thanks for sure. what now what now. we got a bunch of left over shirts from tour. we also got a new 6 song ep on CD. if you're interested in nabbing some of that stuff drop us a line at iamasnake (at) hotmail (at) com . we got back and played a home show in chicago. sal cassato played drums for us. sal cassatto played nothing but break downs the entire time. we'll put a video up or something soon i guess. oh and the vinyls almost done. oh yeah theres new tracks up in the mp3 section. two from that 6 songer i was talking about. and check the tour pictures. and.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

so we are a few shows in to the winter 09 STATE CHAMP / GIVING UP TOUR. no catastrophes yet. we've had some people feign enthusiasm. one kid kind of liked us i think at one of the shows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

alright alright already. so we don't have a release date for the record yet. but that shit is FINISHED. well kind of. i mean. jamie thompson the wiz kid is mastering it right now. like right now. well maybe not right now. i mean i think he might be writing a book report or kissing a girl or trying to fight somebody like RIGHT now. but you know presently. and then after that the tracks are being shipped out to some dudes who know how to make a pancake of vinyl plastic have sounds come out of it and its good to go. the art work is totally done thanks to our friend and cohort MAXFIELD HEGEDUS. all the photos look totally sick. as far as internet stuff we got a myspace now thats not a complete mess myspace.com/givingupmyspace and we got some videos out there in cyberspace. one video of us playing police academy one live, and an ASBD cover we played at the 2008 BEEBSFEST. what a shit show that was. check them out HERE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

kate farstad and jamie thompson are the sickest drummers ever. i mean. you know. like joey jordison is pretty cool but he uses like 2 bass drums or something. thats lame. kate and jamie got our girly folk record sounding like Astro Creep 2000. fucking awsome.

mikie ran off to europe because child support and student loans kicked in. he's sneaking back into the u.s. soon enough hopefully to throw a record release party (tour????) jenny's got stars in her eyes. seans probably running from cops or bill collectors. oh, and the site looks different now. duh.

giving up has been recording this past month with the amazing jamie stepp of all save silence recordings. we have somewhere from 10 to 15 songs that are sounding great and almost at recording completion. we gutted the living room at 202 east sesame street in iowa, borrowed jenny's mom's guitars, bought some frozen pizzas, and bled our fingers/ lost our voices. we are currently outsourcing percussion to our best friends jamie thompson, and kate farstad. the sophomore lounge is drooling all over the place thinking about a release date.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

the sophomore lounge has it's webstore up and running. there's merch/ music from total geniuses all over the place over there. and new stuff coming in all the time. you should visit the store soon if not right now. (http://sophomoreloungerecords.com)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

the last time i heard from jenny she said fuck you i'm going to the beach even if it is raining. the last time i heard from sean he was cussing and gambling.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

giving up came to realization in the summer of 2006. the elements that led to this fruitition were a sweaty non air conditioned house, a brand new, of-age identification card, three boxes of inherited country western tapes/ records, three guitars, a small reed organ, one harmonica, a boombox/ tape recorder, a bad case of the chicken pox, and a pile of lyrics intended for the unrealized thrash-metal band "mischa barton"
